Breadsticks come in all shapes, sizes and flavors. Garlic knots, twisted breadsticks, the grissini, and even plain old breadsticks are staples on pizza parlor menus across the country. Ask your friend (the pizza expert) and he/she will probably tell they know an amazing recipe or two for these doughy delights. But what about the oh-so elusive ultimate breadstick recipe? You know, those secret breadstick recipes your favorite pizza parlor just won’t give up?

Building Flavors

Like any great dish, making great breadsticks is about building a good flavor profile. Pick a few ingredients that go well together, layer them in the right order and amounts, and you’re on the way to flavor town – where you’re the mayor! Simple breadsticks brushed with butter and parmesan are classic and tasty, but for the ultimate stick let your imaginations run a bit. Throw in some new techniques and we’ll have the perfect recipe in no time at all. Today we’ve brought you a few “twisted” breadstick recipes packed with flavor, perfect for entertaining at your next pizza party.

Baked pesto spirals

Creamy Pesto Spirals

Ingredients

  • 16 oz pizza dough, proofed
  • ½ C. basil or sun dried tomato pesto
  • 4 Tbsp. Parmesan cheese, grated
  • ½ tsp. olive oil
  • 1 Tbsp. heavy cream

Instructions

  • Begin by dividing your piece of dough in half. With a rolling pin, or by hand, flatten the dough balls into 6" x 10" rectangles

  • Mix the pesto with the heavy cream, then spread the pesto on one of the dough rectangles.
  • Evenly sprinkle half the grated Parmesan over the pesto, and place the second piece of dough on top.
  • Spread olive oil across the top piece of dough and garnish with the remaining Parmesan.

  • Cut the dough into 6 equal-sized strips.
  • Pick up each strip and twist at both ends to form the spiral.
  • Bake on a sheet pan or pizza screen, lined with parchment paper, for 8-12 minutes at 425°F until golden and cooked through.

Creamy Garlic Ranch Spirals

Ingredients

  • 16 oz pizza dough, proofed
  • ½ C. ranch dressing
  • 2 Tbsp. garlic, minced
  • 4 Tbsp. asiago cheese, shredded
  • ½ tsp. olive oil

Instructions

  1. Begin by dividing your piece of dough in half. With a rolling pin, or by hand, flatten the dough balls into 6" x 10" rectangles.
  2. Mix the garlic with the ranch, then spread the mixture on one of the dough rectangles.
  3. Evenly sprinkle half the grated asiago over the ranch, and place the second piece of dough on top.
  4. Spread olive oil across the top piece of dough and garnish with the remaining asiago.
  5. Cut the dough into 6 equal-sized strips.
  6. Pick up each strip and twist at both ends to form the spiral. Bake on a sheet pan or pizza screen, lined with parchment paper, for 8-12 minutes at 425°F until golden and cooked through.

Just like any other recipe, after you’ve made these a few times feel free to experiment with your own flavors! Simply substitute the pesto or ranch for your favorite filler, swap out the cheese and use the technique as a template to get the job done.
